Under The SeaâAnd Not A Singing Crab in Sight
âUnder the ocean?â Gideon demanded. âThere is no such thing as under the ocean.â
Riya pointed up. âThen you explain that.â
Gideon stared up at the sky and the undeniable shadow of the giant squid. âItâs, uh, some sort of screen. Yeah, like a dome, and the whole top is a screen. Thatâs just a computer image made to look like the ocean.â
âAre you crazy?â Riya pointed up. âLook at thatâ¦â
I tuned them out as they bickered about just what was above us. I knew Gideon would accept reality in a little bit. He just needed a little time to adjust. And I couldnât really blame him for that. But if we were under the ocean, I knew Gideon was wrong about there being no such place as under the ocean. There was one placed rumored to be exactly there.
I just really hoped that wasnât where we were.
I took another step away from them as a whale swam into view. Wow, that guy was big. It looked like it was the size of an oil tanker. I frowned. He stayed in the same spot but seemed to grow bigger. Thatâs really weird. Itâs almost as if â¦
I whirled around, grabbing Riya and Gideon by the arm. âRun!â
Gideon stumbled. âLuce, what are youââ
A shadow fell over us, and all three of us looked up.
âOh my gods!â Riya cried.
I yanked Gideon forward as Riya sprinted ahead. We all raced for the tree line, even though I knew the trees couldnât protect us. We managed to get only about ten feet in when the earth exploded behind us. The ground rippled like a wave, and we were thrown up in the air.
I screamed. Gideon screamed. Riya screamed. Iâm pretty sure even the trees screamed.
My stomach dropped as our upward momentum stopped and we plummeted back down to the ground. I crashed into one branch, then another, and then another. I had the weird thought that I must look like a human pinball. Bonk! High score for Lucy. For the second time, I slammed into the earth. Well, I guess ground was more accurate, as I wasnât sure we were still on Earth.
I curled on my side, willing oxygen back into my lungs. I gasped like a fish on dry land before I gulped in a lungful of air. It hurt like heck, but at the same time, nothing had ever felt so good. But that was the end of feeling good. My side felt like it was on fire. I figured Iâd bruised most of the ribs on that side.
I groaned and rolled to my knees. âRiya?â She lay a few feet away but didnât answer. I scrambled over to her on hands and knees. âRi?â
She lay on her side, her eyes closed, a large cut on her forehead.
âNo, no, no, no.â
Rustling sounded from behind me. I whirled around as Gideon stumbled out from some bushes. His shirt was torn, he had cuts all along his arms and cheeks, and he was limping, but at least he was moving.
